The 2026 Mazda CX-5 just helped Mazda mark a historic vehicle safety milestone. If you’re shopping for a new Mazda, this achievement is a great reason to feel confident behind the wheel. AutoNation Mazda Arapahoe in Centennial, CO is proud to share in this milestone with our community.
A Milestone Nearly Two Decades in the Making
Mazda earned its very first IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK award back in 2008 with the inception of the program, and the number has climbed steadily every year since. Of the 100 total awards, 74 have been the highest tier, TOP SAFETY PICK+, including the one just given to the 2026 Mazda CX-5. Mazda also entered 2026 leading every other automotive brand with eight TOP SAFETY PICK+ awards, and this latest honor brings that total to nine for the year.
What It Takes to Earn TOP SAFETY PICK+
To qualify for TOP SAFETY PICK+, a vehicle needs good ratings in the small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side crash tests, along with acceptable or good rated headlights on every trim level. It must also come standard with front crash prevention technology that earns a good rating in pedestrian testing and an acceptable or good rating in vehicle-to-vehicle testing. According to IIHS President David Harkey, the achievement reflects the consistent commitment Mazda has shown to improving vehicle safety as testing standards evolve.
